Jeremy Annear is a British Abstract Artist, born in Exeter in 1949. His family holidays were spent in Cornwall, where he met and was influenced by artists and the vibrant and influential modernist arts community of the West Penwith in the 1950/60’s. Jeremy set his heart on being an artist at an early age, and exhibited his first abstract work in the mid-sixties. He moved to Cornwall in the mid ‘80’s, painting for many years in a converted chapel on the Lizard peninsular. The quiet sanctity and contemplative nature of this working space is reflected in Jeremy’s fine and balanced abstract pieces. Inspired by the great moderns - Picasso, Braque and the Surrealists, and the St Ives Painters - Nicholson, Lanyon and Heron, he has been described as a ‘St. Ives Modernist’.
The application of oil, layer upon layer, in each painting, achieves a sense of innate harmony. His paintings are brought to life by his passion for music, ranging from jazz to choral, the moods being recreated in the harmony and rhythms of the canvases. He has collaborated with musicians exploring the links that exist or might be developed between the disciplines. Jeremy sculpts his pictures, building up the paint in relief like layers to produce ravishing textures, surfaces and edges.
Jeremy Annear is celebrating a string of very successful one man shows, and the fruition of years of honing his skills has resulted in a reputation as a highly respected artist’. Annear shows at Messums Gallery in London, with the New Millennium in St Ives, and in both Berlin and Leipzig. He has been a member of both the respected Newlyn and Penrith Society of Artists. His work is part of many collections, including Lazard Bros., The Royal West of England Academy, the Dorrien-Smith Collection on Tresco, and The Royal Holloway amongst others. We are fortunate to have exhibited his work for over 20 years now.
